Tailoring the thermal Casimir force with graphene

چکیده
The Casimir interaction is omnipresent source of forces at small separations between bodies, which is difficult to change by varying external conditions. Here we show that graphene interacting with a metal can have the best known force contrast to the temperature and the Fermi level variations. In the distance range 50–300 nm the force is measurable and can vary a few times for graphene with a bandgap much larger than the temperature. In this distance range the main part of the force is due to the thermal fluctuations. We discuss also graphene on a dielectric membrane as a technologically robust configuration. open access Copyright c © EPLA, 201

Casimir interactions in graphene systems
The non-retarded Casimir interaction (van der Waals interaction) between two free standing graphene sheets as well as between a graphene sheet and a substrate is determined. We present several different derivations of the interaction. An exact analytical expression is given for the dielectric function of graphene along the imaginary frequency axis within the random phase approximation for arbit...
متن کاملCasimir force phase transitions in the graphene family
The Casimir force is a universal interaction induced by electromagnetic quantum fluctuations between any types of objects. The expansion of the graphene family by adding silicene, germanene and stanene (2D allotropes of Si, Ge, and Sn), lends itself as a platform to probe Dirac-like physics in honeycomb staggered systems in such a ubiquitous interaction. We discover Casimir force phase transiti...

This paper aims to investigate the pull-in phenomenon of functionally graded (FG) capacitive nanocantilevers subjected to an electrostatic force and thermal moment due to an applied voltage and thermal shock considering intermolecular force within the framework of nonlocal elasticity theory to account for the small scale effect. The FG nano-beam is made of mixture of metal and ceramic which the...
متن کاملA bottom-up route to enhance thermoelectric figures of merit in graphene nanoribbons
We propose a hybrid nano-structuring scheme for tailoring thermal and thermoelectric transport properties of graphene nanoribbons. Geometrical structuring and isotope cluster engineering are the elements that constitute the proposed scheme. Using first-principles based force constants and Hamiltonians, we show that the thermal conductance of graphene nanoribbons can be reduced by 98.8% at room ...

The possibility to modify the strength of the Casimir effect by tailoring the dielectric functions of the interacting surfaces is regarded as a unique opportunity in the development of micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems. In air, however, one expects that, unless noble metals are used, the electrostatic force arising from trapped charges overcomes the Casimir attraction, leaving no room fo...
